House of Shadows

House of Shadows - Rachel Neumeier

And Rachel Neumeier’s House of Shadows is so lovely. Not one for every reader, certainly, but great if you’re the type of person who enjoys slow character development, understated romance, and truly lovely descriptions. Which I do. And I like the fact that it’s not a fairy tale retelling, and yet has the cadences and resonance of a fairy tale, especially the beginning. Plus a very VERY SPOILERLY bit related to Mage Ankennes which I will not go into, except to say that there’s a brilliantly subverted trope there, which made me think a lot about readerly expectations and so on.
