Pretty much everything here originally appeared at my actual blog: By Singing Light. I particularly focus on upper middle-grade and young adult books. I also enjoy adult genre books, especially speculative fiction.

A Spy in the House - Y.S. Lee I first heard about this series from Leila when she posted about the making of the covers. I looked at them and, being a bit of a costume history buff, was gleeful. Accurate clothing? On a cover for a Victorian book? YAY! So I went in with high hopes. And I wasn’t disappointed. The book is light on the one hand, although it’s also clearly written by someone who knows her stuff. On the other hand, it doesn’t shy away from talking about the tragedies of Victorian life. AND I absolutely loved the fact that the characters, even the ones with somewhat radical beliefs, didn’t feel like modern people shoved uncomfortably into the past. Their reactions felt of a piece with their times. And isn’t the cover gorgeous?
